Outline It reads a pasted essay paragraph by paragraph and pulls out its topic sentences, so you can see the argument's actual structure at a glance — no login, no account, nothing ever sent to a server.
How It Works
Paste your essay into the text box, then press Outline It. The tool splits your essay into paragraphs, finds the topic sentence in each one, and lists them out as a running outline — the same reverse-outlining technique writing tutors use, done automatically. Everything happens in your browser; your essay is never uploaded anywhere.
Reading the Outline
Each paragraph gets its own card: a number, a word/sentence count, and its topic sentence. Underneath, small tags flag anything worth a second look:
- Thin paragraph — under 40 words, which often means an idea needs more development.
- Topic sentence appears later (Cygnus Connect) — the paragraph's real point isn't in the first sentence.
- No clear topic sentence found (Cygnus Connect) — the sentences in that paragraph don't share enough common ground for the tool to identify one.
- No visible transition (Cygnus Connect) — the paragraph doesn't open with a word or phrase that links it back to the one before.
- May drift from your thesis (Cygnus Connect) — the topic sentence shares very little language with the thesis you entered.
Typical Workflow
- Paste your essay, separating paragraphs with a blank line.
- (Optional, Cygnus Connect) Paste your thesis sentence to check paragraph alignment.
- Press Outline It to build the reverse outline.
- Read down the topic sentences on their own — does the argument still make sense end to end?
- Fix the flagged paragraphs, paste the revision back in, and run it again.
Free vs. Cygnus Connect
Free covers essays up to 1,500 words or 10 paragraphs, with topic sentences pulled from the first sentence of each paragraph and thin-paragraph flagging. Cygnus Connect removes the length cap and adds smart topic-sentence detection (catching buried or missing topic sentences), thesis-alignment checking, transition detection between paragraphs, and multiple named draft slots so you can compare revisions side by side.
Privacy
Your essay is analyzed entirely inside your browser — Outline It never uploads it to a server. Nothing is stored anywhere except your own device's local storage, and only if you choose to leave it there.
Current Status
Outline It is a first build. Future updates may add more draft-slot capacity, printable outline exports, and additional structural checks.
